There’s nothing quite like a birthday to provide the perfect excuse to escape the hustle and bustle of Harare and retreat into the wilderness with a group of friends. While Wild Nyanga (www.wildnyanga.com) is often our first choice for a getaway, this time, we decided to venture to another of our favourite locations—the stunning Bvumba Mountains in Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands.

Bvumba is an enchanting destination known for its cool mountain air, misty forests, and breathtaking landscapes. Accommodation options in the area cater to a wide range of travellers, from budget-friendly cottages and intimate lodges to the iconic and historic Leopard Rock Hotel, renowned for its elegance and world-class golf course. However, for this trip, we opted for a place deeply beloved by birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike—Seldomseen Cottages. Nestled within its own private afro-montane forest, Seldomseen offers a tranquil and immersive experience in nature, making it an easy choice for our stay.

The Journey & A Sweet Welcome at Tony’s Coffee Shop

The drive from Harare to Bvumba was smooth and straightforward—approximately four hours on well-maintained tar roads. Of course, no trip to the Bvumba is complete without a stop at Tony’s Coffee Shop, a world-famous gem renowned for its decadent cakes and meticulously crafted drinks. If you’ve never indulged in one of Tony’s creations, you are missing out on one of Zimbabwe’s finest culinary experiences.

Our group of six was eager to sample the delights on offer, so we decided to share three different cakes among us, accompanied by rich, flavourful hot drinks. Each bite was a symphony of flavours, but the unanimous favourite was the Whiskey and Chocolate Cake—so irresistible that we found ourselves returning later in the weekend for another slice! Tony himself is a charming and passionate host, personally guiding guests through his handwritten menu, which is as intricate as the desserts he serves. He sources only the finest ingredients from around the world, ensuring that every sip and bite is a luxurious treat. Be warned—this is a place where your taste buds will embark on an unforgettable adventure. Highly recommended!

Settling into Seldomseen

Upon arrival at Seldomseen Cottages, we were warmly welcomed by the delightful owners, Ken and Sue Worsley, who made us feel at home right away. Our accommodation for the weekend was Witchwood Cottage, a cosy retreat surrounded by lush greenery and the tranquil sounds of nature. Our itinerary was simple—quality time with great company, delicious home-cooked meals, leisurely walks, birdwatching, refreshing swims in pristine mountain streams, and evenings spent by the fire with good wine and friendly competition over board games.

Exploring Blue Swallow Ridge

One of the highlights of our trip was an invigorating hike up Blue Swallow Ridge. The round trip took us about four hours, leading us through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the region. The trail meandered past crystal-clear streams, vibrant wildflowers, and towering indigenous trees, with an ever-present chorus of birdsong accompanying our journey. As we ascended, we were treated to spectacular panoramic views of the rolling highlands below, a true reward for our efforts. The rich biodiversity of the area was on full display, with dazzling butterflies flitting through the trees and a variety of bird species soaring overhead—a paradise for birding enthusiasts.

Unwinding & Making Memories

Evenings at Seldomseen were spent gathered around a crackling fire, sipping red wine, sharing stories, and engaging in lively game nights. The peaceful seclusion of the forest, combined with the warmth of good company, made for the perfect end to each adventurous day.

Bvumba is a destination that captures the heart with its blend of serene landscapes, rich biodiversity, and warm hospitality. Whether you're an avid hiker, a birdwatching enthusiast, or simply someone seeking a refreshing escape, the Bvumba Mountains offer an experience that is both rejuvenating and unforgettable.

Would we go back? Absolutely! And next time, we might just stay a little longer to soak in more of its magic.
